Variables are identified by using the $ sign before the appropriate name.
They are used for different purposes when entering XPaths in RuleMaker and FormMaker.
In RuleMaker, they are used to refer to 'variables' that are defined for the current node (agent). Therefore the most likely cause of this error is that the 'variable' you are trying to use has not yet been defined. Once this has been entered in the 'Variables' section at the bottom of the screen, the error should go away. Please also make sure that the 'variable' name has been entered in exactly the same way (including both spelling and case) in the workspaces section, and in the actual XPath.
In FormMaker, they can be used to refer to the current repeat context location when entering the binding information for components within a repeat. Therefore the error will occur if the current component is not within a repeat, or if the variable names have been mis-spelt. The XPath Guidelines section will state exactly what the names of these variables are, and can be copied and pasted into the XPath to ensure they are used correctly.
